What is myofascial release?

Myofascial release (MFR) is a therapeutic technique that aims to release tension, restrictions, and adhesions within the fascia, a connective tissue that surrounds and supports muscles, bones, and all other structures in the body. This technique, first developed for humans, is used with horses and other animals to promote improved mobility, reduced discomfort as well as enhanced overall physical and emotional well-being.

With this technique, the practitioner applies gentle, sustained contact to the fascial tissues using their hands, fingers or forearms. This type of extended touch helps to stretch and elongate the fascia, releasing adhesions and promoting the flow of blood and nutrients to the area.

Although the practitioner’s work will vary in each session depending on the current need of the horse, locations of restrictions, owner goals, etc. There are a few major features of each MFR session:

Assessment: Before starting the myofascial release session, the practitioner assesses the horse's posture, movement patterns, and any signs of discomfort or tension. This evaluation helps identify areas of the horse's body that might have restrictions or adhesions in the fascia.

Observation and Feedback: As the practitioner applies contact, they observe the horse's reactions and responses. The horse's body language, movement and changes in tension can provide valuable feedback on the effectiveness of the technique and the areas that require attention.

Holistic Approach: Myofascial release in horses is often part of a holistic approach to equine wellness. It can complement other therapies, such as chiropractic care, massage, and physical therapy, to address musculoskeletal issues and promote overall balance and comfort.

Benefits of Myofascial Release for Horses:

Muscular Relaxation: Myofascial release can help relax tense muscles and alleviate discomfort caused by muscle tightness or overuse.

Improved Range of Motion: By releasing fascial restrictions, horses can experience improved flexibility and range of motion, leading to better movement quality.

Pain Relief: Tension in the fascia can contribute to pain and discomfort. Myofascial release aims to reduce these sensations and promote a more comfortable state for the horse.

Enhanced Performance: Horses with improved mobility, reduced tension, and better overall body balance may perform better in various activities, such as riding, competition or training.

Injury Prevention and Recovery: Myofascial release can be used preventively to maintain optimal muscle and fascial health, as well as to aid in the recovery process after injuries.

Stress Reduction: Just like in humans, myofascial release in horses can have a calming and relaxing effect, helping to reduce stress and anxiety.

Keep in mind, it's crucial for myofascial release to be performed by experienced and knowledgeable equine practitioners who understand the unique anatomy and needs of horses. As with any therapeutic technique, consultation with a veterinarian or equine healthcare professional is recommended to ensure that myofascial release is appropriate for your horse's specific condition and needs.
